Some families will experience an inpatient stay at Royal Brompton Hospital for surgery, a procedure or specialised treatment plan. This could be for a day, a few nights or sometimes for many months. We support these families both practically and emotionally by funding many varied projects and initiatives, as well as through direct contact with parents and patients.
Face to face
Our friendly hospital based staff regularly visit families on the wards to listen to their concerns, give support and tell them more about our charity and how we can help them in the future. Parents are also very welcome to visit us in our charity office (on level 2) where they can pop by for a tea or coffee and a chat.
For those who arrive at the hospital in an emergency we can provide packs containing toiletries and other essentials, we also have a supply of pyjamas, socks and snack foods. If a family need a specific item from the local area, a favourite food or personal product we will assist whenever possible.
Social evenings for parents and carers
We hold regular events for parents staying at the hospital, such as pizza evenings or pamper sessions. They are a great opportunity to take some time out, away from the busy ward environment, to talk to other parents and have some time to breathe. They are always well attended and well received.
‘I’ve been to two pizza nights! Both were fantastic! It gave me a chance to take a break from the hospital but knowing I was not too far away from my baby! And we met lots of lovely people! It was nice as it meant you knew others within the wards so you could always talk to them!!! Xxxx’ Lotti – Brompton mum
‘I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Brompton pamper nights when I was in hospital with my son. Time away from the ward and the bedside was invaluable in helping me gather my thoughts and build my strength up for the long journey ahead. Mary xx’
Ante natal support
We hold monthly classes for parents who have received a diagnosis of a cardiac condition in their unborn baby. Working with the fetal nursing team and the Brompton centre for fetal cardiology we provide information and support within the sessions, as well as a guided tour of the hospital and ward facilities and chance to meet with other parents. This unique service has been running for over two years, in which time we have met numerous new families and helped to reassure them about their upcoming admissions and future.
Funding amenities and treats for families
The charity aims to provide all of the little extras to help improve the overall hospital experience for children and relatives. We ensure that parents have access to tea, coffee and other refreshments 24 hours a day, we provide clothing detergent and cleaning products, items for patients on the ward such as high chairs and baby baths, plus a huge variety of treats, rewards and special items for children.
We provide seasonal gifts for all of our patients and their siblings, at many points throughout the year, including Christmas, Easter and Valentine’s Day and presents for parents on special days including Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
