The Brompton Fountain is a charity supporting children with serious, often life threatening, medical conditions who are under the care of Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust, the largest specialist heart and lung centre in the UK.
Our support also extends to their families as we understand how having a child with a health condition can impact on the whole family.
WHAT DO WE DO?
We work closely with the hospital teams within the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, children’s wards, outpatient clinics and school to ensure support is given from the point of diagnosis onwards.
We help families both practically and emotionally while on the wards and also once they are at home through the provision of additional services, vital resources and equipment that are outside of the NHS remit.
The Brompton Fountain recently celebrated 10 years as a registered charity. We are extremely proud to have supported thousands of families and made a huge difference to the facilities and environment available to patients and parents throughout this time.
The charity was born from a need and desire on the part of the hospital and families to improve parent involvement with patient care. A meeting in November 2003, organised by the hospital, brought together staff and parents to discuss how better to improve the experience for paediatric patients and their families.
Geoff Baldwin, former deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees, who attended and facilitated much of this crucial meeting, said:
“As a result of this, a group of parents, including myself, went on to found The Brompton Fountain. I am very proud to have been involved with establishing this charity and to have had the privilege of working with the other parent and staff trustees.”
The following objectives are central to our ongoing strategy and core values:
• To provide information for parents and families of children undergoing treatment within the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.
• To provide a support network for parents and families of children undergoing treatment within the Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust.
• To help ensure a comfortable and relaxing environment for families whilst their child is receiving care as an inpatient in the Royal Brompton Hospital.
• To act as advocates for parents and families of children undergoing treatment within the Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust.
We thank Lord Borwick, our founding Chairman, for his support throughout the charity’s creation, giving us the foundation to grow and develop to where we are today, and the opportunity to be looking forward to the next ten years and beyond.
