Sherry Bevan Runs Her First Half Marathon For The Brompton Fountain

Last year [writes Sherry] I took up running - I'd taken it up once before in 2007 for about three months and managed to run/walk around my first 5k and then I stopped. But last January, I decided I really did need to do something to get fit and started again - at first running 4 minutes, walking for 1minute and gradually increased how long I was running for. At first I was just aiming to run the whole of a Race for Life 5k. But then I started to enjoy running; joined a club (Petts Wood Runners) and entered a 10k in September; the next step after that was a half-marathon. I found an event in February 2009 - the Sussex Beacon. Not too far from home, and a couple of friends had entered too. At times during December and January, as I went out running at night in the freezing cold, wind and rain, I wondered about the sanity of entering a February half-marathon which meant I had no choice but to train through the winter months.
Meantime I had got to know Sarah through a brilliant running community: www.fetcheveryone.com. I knew Sarah had planned to raise sponsorship for The Brompton Fountain by competing in the London Triathlon last summer but plans got waylaid when William became too ill for Sarah to train. Out running one night, I had the bright idea of using my first half-marathon to raise sponsorship money on her behalf. I thought it would be good motivation to keep me running in the winter evenings. And it turned out that I quite liked running in the dark and cold. I definitely wasn't a lizard in a former life.
I soon got to work telling all my friends, family and work colleagues about my half-marathon plan and asked them to sponsor me. I added a line to my e-mail signature to tell them about my half marathon, and this did get me a few extra sponsors too. I don't have the exact amount yet - so far I have raised £550 which I am delighted about.

And on the day, I ran all the way - yay! - and completed the event in 2h 24m 56sec, even managing a sprint finish to get under 2h 25.

Moulsham Infants School Raised funds at their Christmas Show

Every year Moulsham Infants' School in Chelmsford Essex chooses various charities to support during particular events throughout the school year.

In December 2008 the school chose the Brompton Fountain, along with one other charity, to receive donations from parents and visitors to the children's Christmas play. The work of the Brompton Fountain Charity was brought to the attention of the parents and other visitors to the school at the end of the play which was shown over three days at the end of the school term. The school presentation this year was called 'Babushka' and was performed by all the Year 1& 2 children in front of full audiences and local councillors including the mayor. The Brompton Fountain was mentioned at the start of each show and a poster was on display in the school foyer outlining the work of the Brompton Fountain. At the end of the show everyone was given the opportunity to donate funds to the charities mentioned.

We thank Mrs Smith, the Headteacher, for choosing the Brompton Fountain which was particularly appreciated as Jenna Day, a Year 2 pupil, was born with TGA and has been a patient of the Royal Brompton Hospital since birth.

Viva Las Vegas!

While their friends were busy training for their bike ride, Jacqui and Paul Shrubb were bringing Las Vegas to Sussex at their annual 'Red October' extravaganza. They held a casino night complete with show girl dealers and an appearance by Elvis Presley no less! The evening really did show how to have fun at the same time as raising money, something that Red October is all about, as well as raising £1,200.

Jacqui has recently raised £2000 from a bingo night and, as well as planning her next big Red October event, is also writing to celebrities to request their favourite recipes to compile into a cook book to sell with proceeds going to The Brompton Fountain.
