Mia Gleeson

Mia is the 2nd of twins born at 35 weeks. She weighed 3lb11oz, whilst her twin brother Michael weighed 4lb12oz. She spent 2 months in St Peter NICU, before coming home on ng feeds. Mia had been diagnosed with TGA. She went into the Brompton on the 17/02/05 for a BT shunt. When they couldn't get her off the vent, the docs decided she needed a PA Band, so she had that done. Then the band was too loose - it was difficult to judge - so she had the band tightened but was still unable to come off the vent. The doctors spoke about a trachy, but tried to extubate one last time and it worked. But it was a slow process - she spent 6 weeks on CPAP, then had a gastronomy and a Nissen. That's when she had a respiratory arrest, so she was diagnosed as having tracheomalacia and needed a trachy. We were in June by then, with her heart still not fixed. She was fine for a while but then had another respiratory arrest as well as a cardiac arrest, so she went for a Switch. The surgeon wasn't sure she would make it. Things were looking really bleak back then, but she did make it, and came on in leaps and bounds. Finally she went to Rose Ward, where we waited for Mia's care package to be arranged. We finally came home on the 20th December. She is going back in on the 25th September to have her trachy removed. I would like to thank all the doctors and nurses that looked after her. We met some lovely people while we were there.
