Harefield Hospital

HarefieldHospitalHarefield Hospital is situated near Uxbridge, Middlesex, and has 168 beds, more than 1300 staff, 5 operating theatres and 4 catheter laboratories. It has a cardiology unit, carries out cardiac and thoracic surgery, and is also one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplants. The hospital has jointly pioneered work in the development of ‘artificial hearts’ (also known as LVADs – Left Ventricular Assist Devices).

There is also a dedicated ‘heart attack’ centre dealing with emergencies from outer NW London. Sophisticated diagnostic technology used at the hospital helps many patients receive treatment without the need for invasive procedures, while others benefit from pioneering work which allows then to have minimally invasive surgery.

The hospital also carries out chest surgery, and treats patients suffering from cancer of the lung, chest and oesophagus. Much of its pioneering research is performed alongside the Heart Science Centre, based within the hospital grounds
